The new four-week cycle will start with Chrome 94 in Q3 2021, and at this faster rate, we’ll see Chrome 100 launch into the stable channel by March 29, 2022. A four-week release cycle ensures faster feature updates for users, but it has its own drawbacks, including fewer new features in updates than earlier. They will still get security updates on a bi-weekly schedule, but Google notes that “those updates won’t contain new features or all security fixes that the 4 week option will receive.” This feature will be available to enterprise admins and Chromium embedders.

For those users, Google is adding a new Extended Stable option with updates that come every eight weeks. Google, however, also acknowledges that not everybody wants to move this quickly - especially in the enterprise.

“As we have improved our testing and release processes for Chrome, and deployed bi-weekly security updates to improve our patch gap, it became clear that we could shorten our release cycle and deliver new features more quickly,” the Chrome team explains in today’s announcement.

That’s one way to hasten the singularity, I guess, but it’s worth noting that Mozilla also moved to a four-week cycle for Firefox last year. Apparently, Brave is another Chromium browser switching to the new schedule, so they told the Verge.Google today announced that its Chrome browser is moving to a faster release cycle by shipping a new milestone every four weeks instead of the current six-week cycle (with a bi-weekly security patch).

Any Chromium-based browser that doesn’t adopt this new schedule will quickly be left on different version numbers compared to Chrome, leaving them potentially behind on features as well. Like Google’s browser, Microsoft Edge has its core in Chromium, as do many other browsers. To help our enterprise customers who need an extended timeline to manage updates, Microsoft Edge will offer an Extended Stable option aligned to a longer, eight-week major release cycle this option will only be available for customers with managed environments. However, we recognize that enterprise customers who manage complex environments need more time to plan and test Microsoft Edge updates. Starting with Stable channel version 94, Microsoft Edge is moving to a 4-week major release cycle cadence. Microsoft is also offering the same “Extended Stable” eight-week cycle to customers with managed environments that Google is. A preliminary schedule puts Google’s change at September 21 for a stable release. That’s roughly the same timeline Google is targeting, with Chrome 94 also being the first release on the four-week cycle. Microsoft says that this change will take effect with the release of Edge version 94 which, according to a public schedule, is set to be released in beta during the week of September 1 and in the stable channel during the week of September 23. The new schedule, as Google mentioned, allows for faster rollouts for new features and quicker security and bug fixes as well. Take a look at what we currently have planned for the upcoming. We are working to continuously improve the experience and we welcome your feedback. Over time, you'll see the Microsoft Edge roadmap fill with more features and you can filter by selecting Microsoft Edge from the Products section.

#Microsoft edge browser upcoming fourweek release update
In a brief article posted today, Microsoft confirmed that it would switch Edge over to the new update schedule that was announced for Chrome earlier this month. Microsoft Edge has been added to the M365 Roadmap. Following in the footsteps of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge will adopt a new update schedule that drops updates every four weeks. Starting this September, updates to Microsoft Edge are set to speed up.
