Yet unlike every other device from that time that works without a hitch such as mice, monitors, keyboards, nearly any external media, ect., its the printers that stump the best and brightest of the IT world. Im not sure of the history of comsumer printers, but they have probably been around just as long as the personal computer. Its beyond me why still in 2011 we are having troubles with printers. Have you tried connecting via a cable?Īs for the problem with jobs getting stuck, I find that I have to delete the task, restart the print spooler service in Windows, and sometimes delete the task again. But hey, I don't even trust them via a cable.

Personally I'd say that by trying to hook up your printer via wifi you're just giving yourself more problems. I'm incredulous over the idea that someone hasn't found a way to get them to work yet. Honestly, since I first dealt with a computer-printer setup at the age of 7, I have yet to see a setup that works flawlessly. You're blaming HP for the problem when in reality it's printers in general that suck.

I can still get ink for it (either HP or compatible cartridges), and I refuse to buy fancy features I'll never need in a printer.Īdditional note - even beta operating systems still support it (such as Windows 8 builds and OS X 10.7 Lion), despite its age. That very ease of use and reliability is why I'm in no hurry to replace it (despite that the printer itself has been EOL since 2006). (It's outlasted two motherboards so far.) As long as I keep it fed with paper and ink, it will likely outlast me. In the six years I've had the printer, it just keeps on printing. I have so little need, or use, for a scanner, that I simply avoided the attachment - I needed multi-OS printer support far more (even in 2005, when I bought the printer). Even worse, it (when the printer was new) cost nearly as much as the printer. While user-swappable, it's only supported in Windows. One of the add-ins, though, is a scanner module that replaces the printheads.

Printers with add-on fuctionality are almost as bad, unless you avoid getting sucked in.Ī case in point is my own six-year-old HP DeskJet 940C - a USB inkjet printer from the days of XP.Īs long as you stick to printing, it's the very definition of Plug and Print - plug it in to a supported (by the OS) USB port, and you'll be able to print, using drivers included with the operating system. I hate all-in-ones from *everybody* (not just HP) mostly because they are so neither fish nor fowl that the drivers wind up being a hodgepodge. The installer could be failing because of that I'm not sure to be honest.

I tried everything and no luck:Īlso, there's an unknown device sitting in Device Manager that reads "Photosmart C6300 series." I can't get it to install any drivers though (or at least I have no idea where they're located).Īnother thing, all this happened after I installed Windows 7 SP1. There's one massive thread about this issue. The print job stays in limbo in the Printers folder until I kill the spooler service and delete the files inside the spool folder. I did add the printer over the network, and I thought that at least I could get printing working (scans would not), except now for some reason the printer connection fails when I'm trying to print documents in duplex.

I tried bloody EVERYTHING to get a clean install, including running some special uninstallers provided in the large >180 MB driver package. The installer would always fail right after detecting my printer, with a giant X and a "Device setup failed to complete" error. Then I removed and reinstalled the drivers, and also noticed that HP released a hotfix for Windows 7 圆4 machines as somehow that was a known issue. So I thought, maybe I should rerun the printer installer from the Start menu. Then at some point, I recall seeing the printer not showing up at all in the Printers folder. It was to be a wireless connection between the printer and the router. For a while, the drivers for my Photosmart C6380 installed just fine on a fresh Windows 7 圆4 install on my laptop. Now a decade later, the same thing happens. Sometimes the prints would suddenly fail, and the print job would remain stuck in the printer folder until after a reboot (was using Windows 95/98 at the time). I say 'crap' as what I'm experiencing right now is very similar to what I got almost ten years ago with my first printer, a DeskJet 695. Kind of hoping for a solution here other than a reformat and reinstall, and I definitely don't want to do that over just a set of crappy printer drivers.
